What is the next step in the procedure once your passport has been printed?

Once your passport has been printed the next step is to be ready for dispatch to the address you specified in your application.

Local and central printing of British passports

HM Passport Office prints passports through central and local prints. The more cost effective one is the central print. However, the distribution that the system makes is based on the fee the customer paid for.HM Passport office strives to use the central print as much as possible because it is also more cost effective for them, as well but still typically priority and collection services, such as Premium, are automatically sent to the local print.

Central print personalises 34-page or 50-page passport books by adding customer details, including their nationality and photo. This passport printing service also prints other passport types, such as British overseas territory passports and Diplomatic or Official passports.

The procedure of local print is a service that allows the printing of passports in each of the HM Passport Office processing centers. However, it cannot be used for every type of passport. With this passport printing service only 34-page or 50-page passports.

There are some criteria based on the decision between central and local passport printing is made and they are, as follows:

  1. The way the customer submit his/her application - by a paper form or digitally.

  2. Which service the customer went for - the premium one or the standard one.

  3. What is the type of the passport the customer applied for?

  4. 4. Has the customer asked for a braille sticker?

  5. Whether the customer contacted the HM Passport office for an update on his/her passport status.

  6. Whether there are any specific reasons to go for the local printing since it is the less cost effective one and should be used only when necessary.

How long does it take for a British passport to be delivered to you once you receive the notification that it has been printed?

A concrete answer cannot be given to this question since the period of delivery varies depending on many different factors and circumstances. That’s why we conducted a little research on the matter and what we found out is, as follows:

First thing first, we need to track the whole procedure of getting a new passport - from the moment you submit your application to the moment you have it delivered to you.

How long the whole procedure takes also cannot be said exactly in general since there are different opinions and statistics about the average waiting time.

However, The public accounts committee (PAC) issued a report of the HM Passport Office, which shows results of 360, 000 people waiting for longer than 10 weeks in order to receive their renewed passport. Recently the waiting is not that long.Even according to the official government’s website, currently, the usual waiting time when you opt for the standard service is no longer than three weeks. This is also the general opinion that people share on social media from their personal experience.

Different people give different answers to the question how long it takes to renew your passport. Some people say that they waited for less than two weeks to receive their new passports while others say that they waited for even four weeks.

As far as the period between the print of the passport and the delivery is concerned, people also share different opinions. Some say that it took only 4-5 days for the passport to be delivered to them once it was printed, while others say that it took more than a week. However, the prevailing opinion is that it takes not more than 3-5 days to have your passport delivered after it was printed so we can assume that it is a quite quick procedure that does not take much time which means that once you receive the notification that your passport has been printed you are extremely close to having it with you and being able to make it to your trip abroad.

The same opinions were shared both for an adult and child’s passport which means that there are not concrete specifics depending on what type of passport you are applying for.

Of course, in order to speed up the process, you can always strive to fulfill all the mandatory requirements so you don’t slow the whole procedure unnecessarily yourself.

Can I track my passport application?

The answer is yes. If you have any concerns that your passport delivery might not make it on time for your upcoming trip or you just want to check how the whole procedure is going, you can always track your passport application. The ways you can do that varies depending on the way you submit your application.

If you have applied online with a digital photo, you can track your passport application online here:

https://www.passport.service.gov.uk/track/reference?_ga=2.126972365.1999963853.1714836121-1323609560.1713720042

You need to enter your application reference that you can find in your confirmation email and you will be able to update yourself on your passport status.Just keep in mind that you will be able to use this way only if your passport application starts with PEX or POD.

If you have applied at the Post Office using the Digital Check and Send service, you can track your passport application here:

https://www.passport.service.gov.uk/track/reference?_ga=2.50477929.1999963853.1714836121-1323609560.1713720042

In order to use this way, the Post office must be the one to have taken a photo of you and your reference application must begin with POD. You can find it in your confirmation email.

The third option is available if you have filled in a paper form. You can check your passport application by calling the Passport Adviceline on 0300 222 0000 if you are currently in the United Kingdom and on +44 (0)300 222 0000 if you are outside the UK.

In order to make it even easier for you, when you call, select option 1 and enter either the 10-digit barcode number from your application form or the 9-digit number on your receipt if you have applied at the Post office.

Now that you know the whole procedure of having your passport printed and delivered and how to track its status according to the way you applied for it, you will feel much more calmer while going through the whole procedure.
