UK Passport Renewal 2026: April Fee Hike, Dual-Citizen "No-Fly" Rules, and Today’s EU EES Launch

UK Passport Renewal 2026: April Fee Hike, Dual-Citizen "No-Fly" Rules, and Today’s EU EES Launch

If you are planning a trip to Europe or further afield, the rules for British travelers were completely rewritten this week. As of April 10, 2026, the European Union has officially launched its biometric Entry/Exit System (EES), and the Home Office has just implemented its largest fee increase in years.

1. The April 8, 2026 Fee Increase: The New Prices

The days of sub-£100 adult passports are over. On Wednesday, the Home Office raised fees across the board to move toward a "self-financing" model.

Application Type

New Fee (As of April 8, 2026)

Standard Adult Online (UK)

£102.00

Standard Adult Online (Overseas)

£116.50

Standard Child Online (Overseas)

£75.50

Premium 1-Day Service (UK)

£239.50

2. Today’s Major Change: EU EES Launch (April 10, 2026)

As of today, travelers entering 29 European countries (including Spain, France, and Greece) will no longer have their passports stamped. Instead, the Entry/Exit System (EES) will digitally record your facial image and fingerprints at the border.

  • The Risk: If your passport photo is poor quality or your biometrics are outdated, you may face significant delays at the new self-service kiosks.

  • The Solution: Ensure your passport has at least 6 months of validity and a biometrically accurate photo before you head to the airport.

3. The Dual Citizen "No-Fly" Warning

Since February 25, 2026, a critical rule has caught thousands of dual nationals off guard. If you hold British citizenship plus another nationality (e.g., US, Australian, or EU), you can no longer fly to the UK using only your foreign passport.

  • The Block: Airlines now require a valid British passport or a digital Certificate of Entitlement (£589) to allow you to board.

  • The Trap: You are legally ineligible for a UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation). If you try to board with just a foreign passport, the system will show "No Permission to Travel" and you will be denied boarding.

4. Why 35% of Applications are Currently Delayed

With fees now over £100, a photo rejection is a costly setback. The 2026 AI screening system is rejecting records at a high rate for:

  • "Digital Artifacts": Fuzzy edges from smartphone "portrait mode" or free background removal apps.

  • Landmark Shadows: Shadows under the eyes or chin that prevent the EES and HMPO systems from "mapping" your face correctly.
